Damon's Story:

Hello, I'm Damon Keys. In 1989, at the age of 15, I began working in the landscape industry at Wayne Snow Nursery in Rock Spring, GA as a nursery worker. My job duties included watering, plant care, and eventually, helping customers select plant material. During summer vacations, I worked with the landscape crews installing new landscapes, irrigation systems, and performing routine maintenance services. I found myself becoming more and more interested in this particular field of work, so I began to seek out colleges that offered classes to people interested in horticulture.

In the fall of 1992, after graduating from high school, I moved to Tifton, GA and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. I studied environmental horticulture, and graduated with honors with a degree in landscape design and management.

An internship with a landscape company was required to complete the degree, so in 1994, I returned to this area and worked for Landscape Arts in Ooltewah, TN. After the internship was completed, I stayed with the company for another 2 years. During that time, I decided that I should begin seeking out my own client base. I knew it would take some time to establish myself, so I started Southern Designs Landscaping, as a small side business, while still working full time. At the time, my client base was made up of mainly people in my home town of Chickamauga, doing general yard work and small landscape jobs. Being such a small town, most people that knew me were aware that I was in this line of work, and it didn’t take long before I began to get word of mouth referrals.

Although I enjoyed working for Landscape Arts, I wasn’t gaining any real life experience in the design and bidding phases. The owner and secretary of the company took care of those issues, and my main job was as a crew foreman. Although being a crew foreman allowed me to gain experience in management of time and a landscape crew, I decided to begin seeking a job with a smaller company, so that I could be involved in the other phases of landscape work, such as the initial site visits, design, and bidding process.

In the fall of 1995, I began working with Windwood Gardens. It was mainly a small nursery, but they had begun to offer landscape services a year prior to that. To be fair to the owner, I made him aware of my plans to eventually pull out and work on my own. During my 4 years there, I was able to learn about the bidding process, and gained a lot of experience in building different types of retaining walls, walkways, and operating a variety of heavy equipment. While working there, I met Paul Waters, who had several years experience in turf-grass management, and was also interested in working on his own one day. During the fall of 1999, we began talking about forming a partnership, and in 2000 we formed Cedar Cove Landscaping. We pooled together our small customer base, and six months later, we began working the business on a full time basis.

From experience, we knew that income from landscape designs and installations would not be steady enough to support the company year around, so we decided to offer additional services such as mowing, maintenance, and turf management. This proved to be a worthwhile decision, and these services remain a large part of the sales for the company.

In 2001, I moved to the Lafayette area, and shortly afterwards, Paul moved to Harrison, TN. This put a strain on the business, due to the distance between us, so we decided it would be in the best interest of the company to split the partnership. The split was finalized in 2002, and I was allowed to convert the company to a sole proprietorship.

Cedar Cove Landscaping continues to offer all types of landscape services for the North Georgia and Chattanooga areas. We offer landscape designs, installations, and maintenance for both landscape beds and turf.
